The DTI Technology Strategy Board (TSB) has introduced Innovation Platforms as a new way of providing opportunities to position business and government closer together, generating more innovative solutions to major policy challenges.

Increasing investment by business in R&D to remain competitive is a key part of the work of the TSB and it considers one of the most effective ways to increase investment is through harnessing the power of Government procurement budgets.  The Technology Strategy Board has been encouraged by the enthusiastic response of other partners, to proceed in the two pilot areas:  Network Security and Intelligent Transport Systems and Services.

The Intelligent Transport Systems and Services Innovation Platform provides a framework to bring together Government policy makers, business representatives, academia and a range of other organisations to better understand the challenge, the future direction of Government and the solutions that business may be able to provide or should be working towards.

By making future public procurement opportunities more visible to business, it provides a greater incentive to business to invest in R&D with the knowledge and confidence of future market opportunities.

Research and innovation consortia

innovITS supports the development of research and innovation consortia particularly encouraging companies and individuals who have not previously worked in transport-related areas as well as those currently involved in transport systems.

Many new technologies - for example: distributed networks of sensors, data-mining, agent-based software, modeling & simulation technology, communications technology, speech interface and self-monitoring complex systems - could underpin the development of ITS capabilities.

ITS also raises questions about how drivers and travellers will respond to improved information and intervention strategies
