Background
Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTNs) are an initiative of the UK Technology Strategy Board. Each KTN acts in the public good, with the objective of improving the depth and breadth of technological knowledge in a specific subject among UK industry.
The Intelligent Transport Systems KTN (ITS KTN) is operated by innovITS (KTN Host) under a contract with the Technology Strategy Board (TSB).
Privacy policy
Registration
Details are collected in the registration process for the purposes of establishing contact between the KTN and the registered user and facilitating knowledge transfer.
The KTN host may change the details required and may require specific information to be completed before access to certain information is given. This is to ensure that, for example where confidential information is published, that the KTN host can be confident in the identity and purposes of the registered user.
The details of registered users will be shared with other KTN Hosts and with TSB for the purposes of public good activities that are within the scope of the KTN remit.
Any member cancelling their registration to a specific KTN will be de-registered by that KTN but their details will remain centrally stored and any other KTN memberships will be unaffected.
Any member may demand the deletion of their stored details from all KTN networks. Such deletion is irreversible and will remove all data held and all current KTN memberships.
Site usage
The KTN platform collects user information on all visitors via log files and via cookies - small text files stored on the user's computer. Such files are used to provide aggregated usage statistics and to help usability. The KTN host may monitor access to specific pages or files for the purpose of understanding user behaviour and improving usability.

Data Protection Act
Each KTN Host is, for the period that they are appointed as a host, the data controller of their specific KTN member's data for the purposes of the Act. Such data is securely stored on the KTN platform computers, operated by a professional services provider.
Membership of any KTN will cause the member's details to be centrally accessible to all current KTN hosts. Host organisations can be subject to change. Certain basic information will also be available to members of other KTNs in order to encourage inter-disciplinary networking.
Members normally input their own data and always have online access to view and manage their own data at any time.
KTNs may use the member data to transmit information from themselves or from third parties, but will not pass member data to such third parties.

Privacy and Electronic Communications Act
Most KTN communications are outside the scope of the Act as they are not for the purposes of direct marketing, being non-commercial, non-profit, and undertaken in the public good. As such, KTNs may contact any individuals where there is a possibility that they have an interest or a role to play in knowledge transfer. In order to promote cross-fertilisation in member's interests, membership lists may be shared among KTNs for such purposes.
KTNs may undertake or promote activities that are commercial. In such instances the Data Protection Act will apply. Membership of a KTN will constitute permission for that KTN to send direct marketing messages that are within the scope of its own activities.
KTNs will respect all requests for opt-out of electronic communications

Intellectual Property
Intellectual property is taken to mean copyright, design rights, patents, and industrial secrets. KTNs will take reasonable steps to ensure that users are made aware of the intellectual property implications of participation in KTNs.
A KTN is a mixture of public and private information and networking facilities. As such, users are reminded that they are responsible for their own actions. In particular, users bear individual responsibility to ensure that their own intellectual property is not compromised, and that they do not infringe the intellectual property of others.
Unless otherwise specified, material from a KTN may be copied and re-used subject to fair use in that such use is for non-commercial purposes and the source is quoted including a URL. Note that this policy only applies to content that is clearly the property of the host and that separate permission must be sought from individual contributors of KTN content.
________________________________________
Defamatory or offensive material
Users are reminded that they are individually responsible and legally liable for any statements they make or material that they publish within a KTN.
As publisher, the KTN host is not responsible for the statements made by users, but it will immediately remove any material that it considers unsuitable, or where a reasonable objection has been made to it.
________________________________________
Access to services
Neither TSB nor individual KTN hosts are under any obligation to provide universal service. Membership of a KTN can be withdrawn at any time and will be withdrawn if in the view of TSB or the KTN host a member commits any act that is illegal, likely to cause concern or offence, or is damaging to the objectives or ethos of the KTN.

Changes to this policy
The Technology Strategy Board and KTN Hosts reserve the right to change this policy. Reasonable steps will be taken to inform users depending upon the potential impact of such changes. The policy in force will always prevail over previous policies.
