Your profile - visibility and privacy
10:47 AM on Monday 14 July 2008

As you look around our new KTN site you will have noticed a more than passing resemblance to some of the well known Social Networking sites, mySpace, LinkedIn and so on. Personal privacy is one of the issues associated with those sites so I thought I would outline here our approach and what you can do to manage your visibility and privacy on the site.

The first thing to say is that while we are using a social networking type of tool, the aim is the same as for the KTN as a whole, that is, business networking. It's a fine distinction perhaps, but the point is that the site is there to support the work of the KTN, and therefore your business not as an end in itself.

As  result we have taken a cautious approach to privacy. By default the only thing visible to others is your username - and you can change this if you wish. (Settings link in the main "Action" menu). Your profile, which contains more personally identifiable information, is only visible to people who you connect to. Again this is the default setting, you can change this to be more open or completely invisible if you wish (Edit profile - profile settings).

In any form of networking of course, the more open you tend to be the more successful you are likely to be. But we want that choice to be yours in this context. You can connect to other people in the network - or not. You can even block people from contacting you if you wish. (Settings menu item again).

In short, if the site and its tools are useful to you, please try them out and use them. If not that's OK, and we'll look forward to seeing you face to face at one of our workshops alt.

Best wishes

The KTN Team
